Cockatoo Hill

Welcome to the Daintree's most beautiful boutique resort; a secret paradise perched between Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas where four exclusive tree lodges are your private, temporary home.

Cockatoo Hill Retreat's position is breathtaking. It is situated on a rainforest ridge with wrap around views extending from Hutchinson Hill towards Cape Tribulation and the Coral Sea to the east and to the dramatic heights of Thornton Peak in the west.

Cockatoo Hill Retreat is in the very heart of the Daintree in an area known for its superb biodiversity. In and around Cooper Creek and Noah Creek is where new species of rainforest plants are still being discovered in refugial rainforests thought to be 135 million years old.

As you would expect there is a rich wildlife to be seen regularly at the retreat, including a large variety of birds, the reclusive rainforest cassowary is a regular visitor, living in this forest habitat which also supports the beautiful Ulysses and Cairns Birdwing butterflies, the friendly green tree frog, shy goannas and water dragons.

Location

Beautifully remote yet accessible, Cockatoo Hill Retreat is in the living heart of the Daintree coastal wilderness. Beyond the Daintree River, across the ferry towards Cape Tribulation, lies Cockatoo Hill Retreat - and another world.

You can arrive by road by way of the vehicle ferry across the Daintree River that operates from 6am to midnight daily. Travelling times are approximately 2 hours drive North of Cairns and 1 hour North of Port Douglas. The road to the Retreat is accessible by a traditional vehicle, however for those wishing wish to explore the area beyond Cape Tribulation; you will need to take a 4WD vehicle tour.

The other option is to take a private light aircraft or a helicopter from Cairns and Port Douglas respectively to the country airstrip of Cow Bay, just 4 k's from Cockatoo Hill Retreat. Transfers are available by prior arrangement.

Accommodation

When you first open the door to your private thatched-roof Tree House, it's as if you have entered into another world. A world of beauty and simple elegance, with magic views above the rainforest to the limitless horizon of the Coral Sea. It's the most inspiring and romantic setting you can imagine. A spacious, welcoming bedroom complete with ensuite opens onto a large balcony. The bedroom features soft, underfloor lighting and a beautiful handcrafted timber king-size bed enveloped in a swirl of netting.

For your convenience your mini bar is well stocked, coffee and teas are available for you to enjoy as you wish.

The Lodge

Crafted from beautiful local timbers and featuring a roof thatched in the traditional Balinese style, The Lodge is an inviting haven, tempting you to laze at your private table after breakfast, gazing at the Coral Sea in the distance…or relax with an evening drink around the curling 'Snake Bar' created from 142 individual cuts of exquisite rosewood mahogany.

The pool bar, by the freshwater wet-edge swimming pool with its soothing cascading waterfall, is another place to escape.

From the large timber deck, the views hold you in awe…there is Thornton Peak, the tallest mountain, often shrouded in cloud and mystery…there is the Coral Sea and, always, there is the rainforest surrounding you.

Breakfast is tropical continental using the choicest local fruits, served in the main lodge as early or late as you wish, local Daintree tea and Mareeba coffee will be on offer.

If you would like us to cater for your lunch, we are happy to organise gourmet picnics, however we do like to encourage you to try other local venues to broaden your experience of the Daintree.
